5 Books That Sparked the Deepest Conversations with My Kids (And Will for Yours Too)

Each book below holds a special place in my heart, transporting me back to a precious moment in time, snuggled up reading with my kids. Why these? Because each sparked conversations that continued long after the final page was turned, and each was requested over and over.

Do you find it pretty magical when you can see your child’s face light up with understanding?  Unexpected questions begin to pour out (and oh, they're so many!).Looking back, I can now see what a cool opportunity it was to read with my kids, not only bond, but to teach without "preaching". Though my very own Edward the Egg stories offer this magical opportunity as well, I would be remiss to not share the books that helped shape my kid's childhood - alongside my Edward bedtime stories.

Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, teacher, or caregiver, you have the incredible ability to create these special moments. I’m sure you already have your own cherished "keeper" books that have touched your heart.

The books I’m about to share aren’t just recommendations—they’re invitations. Invitations to cozy up together, laugh, maybe shed a tear or two.

So, dive in and explore. For even more fantastic children’s books that do more than just entertain, check out the wonderful book blogs I’ve listed below.

Cheers to making magical moments with stories that will warm your heart for years to come.

My "That's a Keeper" Booklist: Top Picks For The Lillte Ones

Finding time for God and Scripture with our little ones can be tough, but this devotional book made it so much easier. It became a favorite part of our morning routine because it’s short, sweet and full of practical ways to see God in our daily lives. Each entry has a Bible verse, a quick reading, a fun activity, and a prayer starter. I tried my best to make reading this in the mornings a habit, hoping my kids would see the benefit of starting each day with Jesus.

This adorable book was always a hit. The book is full of sweet messages about confidence, helping others and the feeling of home. (I especially liked the mother-son bond in the book.) The repetition of words is perfect for early readers; however, the real value came from how it inspired my kids to think about others. Reading about Sam’s excitement as he tackled new tasks inspired my kids to take on their own challenge - so much so that they started baking treats and sharing them with our neighbors!

Yes, it’s a Thomas the Train book. But... all three of mine loved it! They enjoyed cheering Thomas on, and it sparked conversations about believing in yourself, perseverance, the power of encouragement, and staying true to your word. Plus, it’s just a fun read. I can still see us yelling together, “Go, Train, Go”!

This book became a cherished part of our nightly routine when my kids were little. I loved how it nurtured their spiritual awareness and gratitude. It tells the story of a young boy who, amidst the hustle and bustle of family life, notices God’s creation in the simplest things (something I’d love to get better at myself). Each adventure opened their eyes to the magic in everyday moments, from baby ducks to a starry sky. This book always sparked conversation about gratitude and wonder. Unfortunately it’s out of print, but used copies are worth the hunt!

This story follows these “little letters” who dream of being as important as the “BIG”, capital letter firefighters. But this is more than just an ABC adventure. Adorable personified letters get into all sorts of mischief. There’s a lot of clever word play, imagine ‘M’, ‘u’, and ‘d’ teaming up to wash a dirty car (get it? MUD!). When the BIG letters’ fire truck breaks down, it’s our “little letter” heroes who save the day! This book was a keeper because it’s an underdog story that resonated with my kids in the most beautiful way, showing them that even when you’re small, you can make a big difference. It’s equal parts fun, educational, and empowering.
